Are face masks worth it?

Gradually, face masks have become very popular, there are many varieties, types and ingredients. Masks offer highly concentrated treatments to address specific concerns. But unlike a toner or serum, masks deliver the ingredients under occlusion, which helps the ingredients absorb more efficiently.

In case you don't know and before you google OCCLUSION, we define it here: To occlude, in dermatology, means to cover the skin with a material - cream or an element such as plastic/paper - that prevents evaporation. When we occlude the skin, hydration, temperature and blood flow to the area are increased, which helps any product to penetrate more easily.

Think of masks as reinforcements, not essential but beneficial.

If you want to try one, here are three performance-based varieties to consider, according to expert dermatologists:

Sheet masks: These are primarily moisturizing. Having ingredients saturated on the skin in this occlusive way prevents air from getting in and you will get more absorption in a short period of time. It is recommended to store them in the refrigerator for an anti-inflammatory benefit as well.

Overnight Masks: have a thicker texture and help trap any ingredients you put under it. They are ideal for mature skin or very dry skin.

Clay or Mud Masks: These absorb oil and can have a mild exfoliating effect, making them great for oily areas. However, you do not need to apply them all over your face. You can focus on just a few areas.

Application Tip: Apply masks after serum, but before moisturizer, unless it's a leave-in night mask, which can replace your night moisturizer. Like any product that complements your regular routine, masks should be used sparingly, no more than once a week to avoid any irritation.
